History is filled with mentions of hidden messages and double meanings used in secret societies. One of the most interesting we’ve seen to date is called symbol signaling.

What is Symbol Signaling?

Societies determine a symbol to use and then come up with ways of indicating the symbol in documents, art, books or anything their members might come in contact with.

How the Symbol Works:

Information contained within the enclosed space of a symbol becomes highlighted when the symbol is drawn.

Here’s an example I created. This book has various symbols but the intended recipient knows to use only three to form the pre-determined symbol (by connecting them in the right order). Combined, they enclose the word, “secret.” The symbols and order will vary based on the symbol of the secret society.

Other Symbol Signaling Practices

While the main practice of note is above, we have also seen creative uses of symbol signaling where words are enclosed within visible objects and only words within specific objects are used. This is a fun one! Some of our more artistic members might enjoy coding drawings, public art or paintings in this way! Don’t forget to enclose the key for interpretation!
